When the sun set Thursday night, the "Tribute in Light" beckoned, drawing New Yorkers to the Brooklyn promenade.

"It just seems like a place where everybody can get together and feel a sense of peace," said Brooklyn resident Dee Vurbulak.

Vurbulak's husband is a firefighter who lost more than 60 friends on September 11th, 2001. She says he still will not talk about it.

But there were plenty of people on the promenade who wanted to talk about the attacks, especially families with young children.

"This little boy was two months old at the time, and now he's seven," said one observer. "It was very hard for everybody, so we want to remember everybody that suffered on that day and remind ourselves how lucky we are."

For the Schuman-Reed family, looking at the Tribute in Light is an annual tradition.

"We bring them out here and we come out here ourselves to remember what happened and to remind our children of what happened," said the family.

The tribute was not created as a memorial, instead as way to temporarily fill the void in the city's skyline. Some say for them, the tribute fills an emotional void.

"Those are my towers," said one New Yorker.

Others feel the tribute allows them to connect with those still grieving seven years after the attacks.

"I think it's so great for every single family member who lost someone that we're still remembering them tonight," said another.
