Starting today, drivers who stop too far into the intersection are more likely to get a ticket, now that the city has made it easier for officers to enforce laws meant to keep traffic flowing.

Vehicles who "block the box" will be hit with a $115 fine – an increase of $25.

Blocking the box will also now be considered a parking violation instead of a moving violation, so traffic agents can write up tickets as well as police officers.

Agents have been given handheld devices, which scan registration stickers and print tickets.

Some drivers worry about how fair the program will be, but others say they will try anything to reduce congestion at every light.

"That's going to be rough, cause traffic moves slow and you get caught in the box," said one driver this morning.

"I don't like paying the extra money, but I think something needs to be done here in this city because people just abuse it and they have to free up the traffic," countered another.

"I don't think the traffic agent has the experience the police officers do, the training is totally different," said a third. "I think the police officers have the right. I don't think the traffic agents do."

Pedestrians are affected by blocking the box, as well. The ones who spoke with NY1 said they liked the idea of more enforcement of the law.

"It happens all the time, and people have to walk out in the middle of the street to get by," said one New Yorker. "I think it's a great idea."

"I don't drive but I'm always trying to cross streets and I can never get across the street because there is just so much traffic," said another.

More than 100 tickets were issued on a single day during a pilot program last week, compared to about 40 tickets on a typical day last year.
