Police Continue To Search For Bronx Hit-And-Run Driver
A construction worker just months away from retiring is recovering after being run over and severely injured by a hit-and-run driver. Police have very few clues as to who's responsible, so the family reached out to NY1's Bronx reporter Dean Meminger for help.Pins hold 61-year-old Howard Golding’s left foot together, while his right foot remains swollen and bandaged. Golding gets emotional as he talks about how his ankles and feet were crushed by a hit-and-run driver.
"I’ve been in construction work 36 years now and I never get hurt and all of a sudden this happened to me,” says Golding.
The veteran worker routinely woke up early to take the 5 a.m. train to his job, but on August 12th, something went horribly wrong. As he was crossing Boston Road to go to the Baychester subway station, he was hit by a car. Golding says he tried to stand out of the way, because the driver was being reckless.
"I could see it from a good distance, he weaving in the street,” says Golding. “I was six feet from the sidewalk. If I was in the middle of the street, I wouldn’t be here today."
Golding has been at Jacobi Medical Center for three weeks where doctors performed two surgeries to repair multiple injuries. They also had to amputate his left big toe.
Police are looking for the community's help in finding the driver of the car. Officers from the 47th precinct have looked at pictures from red light cameras in the area and surveillance video from stores, but nothing has turned up.
"I think a guy like this, they should catch and put him in prison,” says Golding.
Golding says he believes he was hit by a black midsized car – either a Honda, Toyota or a Nissan. People in the area say they know how dangerous Boston Road can be.
“Anything after twelve o’clock midnight, this is a race track. You got cars racing up and down the Road. It’s ridiculous. Really, really bad,” says one area resident.
Golding says he was planning on retiring in November when he turns 62 years old and then he was going to move to Florida. Now he says he doesn't know what he is going to do. It's not clear how well he will be able to walk again.
Anyone with any information about the hit and run is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-tips or text crimes and enter TIP577.
