Facing shortfalls in revenue, one of the city's daily newspapers may have to close up shop.

The New York Sun could stop publication at the end of the month if new financial backing isn't found.

In a letter to readers in Thursday's paper, editor Seth Lipsky says the expense of producing and distributing the paper exceeds the Sun's revenues.

He adds that heavy losses have been covered by investors to this point, and that as costs rise and newspaper advertising declines, a broader base of help is needed.

Discussions about investments to keep the paper alive are ongoing, but Lipsky says there is no promise of a deal.

The Sun launched in October of 2001, and started distributing daily editions six months later.
