Police on Monday continued to probe the death of a college student who was found strangled in his Manhattan apartment Sunday night.

Kevin Pravia, 19, was found dead in his fifth-floor apartment on West 15th Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues in Chelsea.

The Pittsfield, Massachusetts native was an honors student at Pace University.

He was found by his roommate, lying in bed, strangled with an electrical chord, with his mouth stuffed with plastic.

A neighbor said she was in her apartment when the roommate made the discovery.

"I was at home last night and I heard somebody screaming in the hallway and I opened up my door and his roommate was yelling, 'he's dead, he's dead,'" recalled the neighbor, "and I ran upstairs because I didn't know who it was, and she was in the hallways, absolutely having a freak-out."

The neighbor said the roommate and Pravia were longtime friends, who had just moved into the apartment several weeks ago.

"She did not have any idea what had happened," said the neighbor. "She had tried to get in touch with him over the weekend and he hadn't responded to any of her text messages or her phone calls."

The neighbor says detectives told her Pravia may have died as early as Friday night.

Residents say they heard music coming from Pravia's apartment Friday night.

In response to the young man's death, Pace University issued the following statement:

"We are deeply saddened by the news. Our sympathy and thoughts go out to Kevin's family, friends, and classmates."
