New statewide statistics released Sunday found girls are graduating from New York high schools at a much higher rate than boys.
A little more than 74 percent of girls graduated from a four-year program last year, compared with slightly fewer than 64 percent of boys.
Educators say it boils down to effort and focus, with girls taking their studies more seriously.
But the gender gap is especially prominent among Black and Hispanic students.
Only 41 percent of Hispanic boys graduated last year, compared with 54 percent of Hispanic girls. The numbers are only slightly higher for African-Americans, with 57 percent of females graduating compared to 44 percent of males.
The state Department of Education has convened a committee this year, to explore ways to boost the graduation rates of both groups.
