After several weeks of complaints, the city said Sunday that it will scale back the Waterfalls art project.
The operating hours of the four installations are being cut in half, after some Brooklyn business owners and residents complained that the salty mist from the falls is damaging trees and gardens.
Earlier this month, the owner of the River Café complained that his trees and plants were turning brown. And last week, the Brooklyn Heights Association asked the Public Art Fund to shut the falls down on Labor Day instead of October 13th as scheduled.
Though Parks Department officials have said they do not believe the plants will suffer any long term damage, they say they are cutting back to reduce the impact of the waterfalls on trees.
The new hours of operation take effect Monday, September 8th. The falls will run Tuesdays, and Thursdays through Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
