Starting next month, major airlines like Delta, Continental, and American will ground nonstop flights between New York and 25 domestic and international cities.
Service to another 55 cities will be sharply cut.
The airlines say high fuel costs and the weak economy are forcing them to make the cuts.
The domestic cities being dropped completely are Binghamton, Dayton Beach, Myrtle Beach, Memphis, Tucson, Charlotte, San Jose and Salt Lake City.
International cities being dropped include Bangkok, Liverpool, Naples, Palermo, London-Luton, London-Stansted, Bucharest, and Cologne.
Only two airlines, Delta and AirTran, will still offer direct flights to and from Atlanta.
