Report: More New Yorkers Declaring Bankruptcy
Bankruptcy numbers are reportedly up across the city as more New Yorkers fall victim to the housing crisis.
A report today by Crain's New York Business says the number of New Yorkers declaring bankruptcy this year is up nearly a third from 2007.
The report says more than 14,000 people declared bankruptcy through July of this year, compared to a little more than 11,000 during the same period in 2007.
The report says much of this is due to the subprime mortgage crisis.
In previous years, debtors could borrow money based on the value of their homes. However, now, as debt mounts and homes lose value, many struggling New Yorkers feel they have no choice but to declare bankruptcy.
