Workers at the Bronx Stella D'Oro cookie factory were striking Friday against what they say are unfair reductions in a new contract.

They say the company, located in Van Cortlandt Village, has been in talks to take away workers' sick pay and reduce holidays and wages.

The workers say under the company's proposed contract will lower their wages.

"We have decent wages for our members, we have good health care, good pension, we have sick pay, we have the good vacation entitlement, and what we're trying to do is maintain those items," said Joyce Alston, president of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union Local #50.

State Senator Pedro Espada, Jr. is to provide free produce to workers for the duration of the strike.

Workers say they have not met with the company since last week, and at the moment no meetings are scheduled.

Stella D'Oro has not yet commented on the strike.
