In response to several swimmers recently drowning at city beaches, local leaders promoted beach safety Thursday.
Brooklyn Councilman Domenic Recchia and Brooklyn Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny handed out beach safety fliers at the Coney Island Boardwalk Thursday.
The bilingual fliers urge beach-goers to be vigilant in English and Russian.
"Please, don't let kids out of your sight. It’s very, very important. It has not been the safest season for Coney Island, unfortunately. And we are trying to get people aware," said Brook-Krasny.
"I'll be handing this out for the for the next two weeks here and on all the beaches at Coney Island," said Recchia, "for all the swimmers to know exactly what's going on, how they can avoid tragedies from ever happening again here at our beaches."
The fliers provide basic safety tips for beach-goers, including techniques on escaping rip currents.
Five people drowned in the waters off Queens and Long Island during one weekend last month.
