Police arrested Thursday morning the cousin of an 18-year-old girl shot and killed in Queens Wednesday night in what appears to have been an accident.

Felix Cruz, 18, is facing manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and weapons charges. He's also facing charges of evidence tampering.

Police say they have found what they believe is the gun used in Wednesday night's shooting at a home in Far Rockaway.

It was discovered in an area underneath the second-floor apartment where it took place.

"It appears that he has a .25 caliber automatic in his possession, he takes the clip out, he takes the magazine out points it at her, pulls the trigger, still a round in the chamber strikes her in the chest, she dies as a result," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. "He calls 911 and says on the phone, that 'I've just shot my cousin.'"

Relatives say 18-year-old Veronica Cruz in from Massachusetts visiting family when she was shot in the head.

"She was visiting here. She lives in Boston," said the victim's aunt, Mayda Cruz. "She came down here to visit and that's all I can say. She was a wonderful girl."

"He wasn't a bad kid," said a family friend. "He passed high school with excellent grades. He was planning on going to the Army, so the family was happy about it, you know."

"It was stupid that he pulled out his gun and pointed it at her, but it was an accident," said another family friend.

Police had been looking into the possibility that the gun went off while it was being cleaned; however, authorities will not say if they still believe that to be the case. The gun was found on the ground below the apartment were the shooting allegedly took place.
