Efforts intensified Tuesday to bring a fugitive New York college basketball player back to the United States.

New York Senator Charles Schumer says the U.S. ambassador to Serbia has formally demanded Miladin Kovacevic be arrested and returned to the U.S.

The former Binghamton University basketball player is accused of beating fellow student Bryan Steinhauer of Brooklyn into a coma, and fleeing to his native Serbia.

Schumer says it's time for the Serbian government to act.

"The bottom line is now the Serbian government has no excuse,” said Schumer. “The papers are there, the request has been made at the highest level, and any delay, any excuse, will not be countenanced."

Kovacevic was arrested hours after the beating and was in a Broome County jail for several weeks, before a Serbian diplomat posted his bail and gave him an emergency passport.

Steinhauer remains in a coma.
