Senator Charles Schumer says that the Serbian government will aid in the prosecution of a man who beat a Brooklyn college student into a coma.

Schumer met in Fort Greene, Brooklyn on Sunday with the parents of Bryan Steinhauer, who was beaten by fellow student Miladin Kovacevic, who subsequently fled to Serbia.

Schumer, who has known Steinhauer's family for many years, says he spoke with the American ambassador to Serbia Sunday.

Schumer says the State Department informed him there is an extradition treaty with Serbia which is strong enough to bring back Kovacevic, and is optimistic that the government will cooperate and anyone in the Serbian counsel that helped the man flee the country will be disciplined.

"The new [Serbian] government has a different outlook in terms of the United States and the West. The old government was hostile. The new government wants to be very friendly and be part of the West,” said Schumer.

Kovacevic is accused of beating Steinhauer in a bar room fight and fleeing the country after posting bail on June 6.

Steinhauer remains in a coma.

Steinhauer’s parents say they're devastated by the attack and are thankful for the help of the U.S. Government.
