Frank Powers, a Todt Hill resident and board member of Richmond University Medical Center and Wagner College, was chosen by Staten Island Republicans at a Thursday night convention to be the candidate in the upcoming fall election for outgoing Representative Vito Fossella’s seat.
Powers, pictured above, served previously as president of the Staten Island Academy and as chairman of many Island philanthropic institutions.
Earlier Thursday, sources told NY1 that State Senator Andrew Lanza refused to be a candidate.
Staten Island Democrats chose City Councilman Michael McMahon to be their candidate Wednesday night.
Fossella’s 2006 rival, lawyer Steve Harrison, promised to stay in the race, despite his losing the nomination.
Fossella announced he would not run again after he was arrested on drunk driving charges and admitted to fathering a child out of wedlock.
