Investigators are working to determine what caused a two-alarm fire in the Bronx that left one woman dead and five people injured, three of them firefighters.

Fire broke out in the house on East 224th Street in Williamsbridge just after midnight Monday, killing 22-year-old Eileen Harkins.

Two neighbors desperately tried to get everyone out of the house, but they couldn't reach Harkins. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other victims were taken to Jacobi Medical Center with minor injuries.

Neighbors say Harkins, who was a guest in the house, was hearing-impaired.

"They said a lady was up there, but there was an extreme amount of heat and smoke and no light, so we couldn't get in the house,” said a neighbor.

"She can't be replaced; she’s a person. Those items can be replaced. She can't be," said James Edward, who survived the fire.

Building resident James Sewer, 68, says he was on the first floor of the house and had fallen asleep in his rocking chair when he heard people screaming.

"I was sleeping, and the fellow says, Îfire, fire, fire,’ and I ran outside of the house. And I was looking at the side of the door there and I see fire blazing like mad,” said Sewer. “So I just put on my pants and put on shoes and ran out the house."

The woman who owns the home said ten people were living in the house. She was at work when the fire broke out. When she returned home, she found her street filled with fire trucks.

“It was a terrible tragedy and that's all I can tell you,” said the woman.

More than 100 firefighters responded to the fire. Three of them were injured.

Residents are returning to their homes to gather whatever they can, before they find another place to stay for the night.
