New York can once again claim the title of the safest big city in America.
An FBI report released Monday says the city continues to see its crime rate drop from year to year, bucking the national trend in most categories.
The report says violent crime rose 1.3 percent nationwide last year, but in the city, violent crime fell 4.6 percent.
There was a drop in other violent crimes however, including a 24 percent decrease in the number of rapes.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly attribute the decline to strong police presence and improved strategies for crime prevention.
So far this year, the murder rate has dropped 15 percent and overall crime is down eight percent.
