The former police officer convicted of lying about the beating of Abner Louima was released from a halfway house Friday.
Charles Schwarz served a five-year sentence for perjury after he was convicted of trying to cover up the attack.
Schwarz has maintained his innocence.
The 41-year-old will now be monitored by a probation officer and will participate in a treatment program to help him re-integrate into the community. He's expected to move back to Staten Island.
His attorney says Schwarz wants to put the situation behind him and start a new life.
Four officers were prosecuted in the 1997 attack on Louima, who was beaten and sodomized with a broomstick in a police station bathroom.
Justin Volpe is the only officer still behind bars. He's serving a 30-year sentence.
The convictions of two other officers were overturned.
