Lawyers for Ronell Wilson said Thursday that they will appeal the death sentence that was formally handed down yesterday for the murders of two undercover detectives in 2003.
Wilson became the first defendant to be given the death penalty in a New York State federal court in more than 50 years. He was sentenced to die by lethal injection.
The families of the two detectives and more than 200 police officers packed the courthouse to hear the sentencing.
The U.S. attorney says the death penalty is justified for Wilson, but Wilson's lawyers say the sentence is only about vengeance and that no real good will come of it.
