NYPD Officers Fired After Louima Attack Sue For Reinstatement
Two of the former NYPD officers who were fired after being involved in the Abner Louima torture case are suing to get their jobs back.
Thomas Bruder and Thomas Wiese were convicted of obstructing the Louima investigation after Louima, a Haitian immigrant, was sodomized with a broomstick in the bathroom of a Brooklyn police station house in 1997.
The pair is now suing the department for reinstatement, claiming that Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly rejected their reinstatement applications on improper grounds.
Their convictions were overturned on appeal in 2002 but the court suggested they could have been convicted on other counts had they been charged.
Lawyers for the pair say Kelly improperly used that information in deciding to reject their reinstatement to the NYPD.
Former officer Justin Volpe is serving 30 years in prison for the attack.
Former officer Charles Schwarz is serving five years in prison for perjury and is scheduled to be released next year.
