After having been given just a 25 percent chance of survival, one of the victims of last week's stabbing spree in Manhattan was released from the hospital today after an unexpectedly rapid recovery.

Texas tourist Christopher McCarthy lost half his blood after he was stabbed in the chest last Tuesday evening while riding the southbound C train as it was pulling into the West 110th station. Doctors gave the 21-year-old just a 25 percent chance of survival as he clung to life in critical condition.

McCarthy is now headed home to Houston, Texas, but told the media gathered for his release that he intends to return to New York City to take the mayor up on his offer of a cup of coffee and to see some of the sights he missed because of the stabbing.

McCarthy thanked his doctors and the staff at St. Luke's Medical Center where he made his recovery. He also thanked a retired Navy paramedic George Dempsey, Jr. who was on the subway at the time of the stabbing. McCarthy credited him with keeping him alive in those crucial moments after the attack as he faded in and out of consciousness.

McCarthy says he doesn't harbor any hard feelings against New York despite his near-death experience. When asked if he could forgive his attacker, McCarthy had this to say:

"Of course, I mean, if the only thing, it's just brought me closer to God," said McCarthy. "You can only love. I talked to many reverends and I told them, you know, you feel so small in this giant world and emotionally, you can just hold everyone's hand and feel the power of love."

Kenny Alexis, 20, was indicted Monday on charges of attempted murder, assault, and attempted robbery. He is being held without bail on four counts of attempted murder.

Investigators say Alexis confessed to a 12-hour stabbing spree last week between Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning, but claims he was provoked each time.

Alexis' attorney asked the judge to allow a psychiatric evaluation. His lawyer says Alexis is unable to participate in his own defense.

Police still don't know exactly what provoked the attacks, which began with the attack on McCarthy. The knife just narrowly missed McCarthy's heart and he had to undergo open-heart surgery.

Alexis has also been charged in the stabbing of 30-year-old Ambrosio Castro of Brooklyn inside the Rockefeller Center subway station early Wednesday morning.

An hour later, two Canadian tourists were stabbed in Times Square. Alexis was taken into custody shortly after that.

A judge in Boston released Alexis on his own recognizance just five days before he went on his alleged stabbing rampage.

He is due in court in Massachusetts this week to face a series of misdemeanor offenses.
