"Not allowed to smell the ground when you're on the heel command," shouts Anthony Jerone. He is a drill sergeant for dogs.

He started what he calls his "Doggie Boot Camp" eight years ago. "We teach the dogs what the word 'heel' means, and 'sit' means and 'stay' and 'lie down' and 'come' and the word 'no,' the 'good boy,' the 'bad boy,' the 'OK.'"

"Doggie Boot Camp" is in session every Sunday at Crocheron Park in Queens and accepts dogs of all ages, temperments and breeds.

More than two decades ago, Jerone served in Vietnam as an Army K-9 Specialist and now he's a motorman for the New York Transit Authority. He says he started this workshop in honor of those dogs of war.

"It's a payback to these two German Shepards that I had in the Army that saved my life and I have to repay the services."

Some dog owners say his techniques really make a difference. "My dog didn't know how to sit and she learned how to sit and she's listening and I think he's fantastic. He's really really good." says Agnes Lopano.

Linda Carpe says "I've learned to be a little stern with her and she's coming along well but when Anthony's not looking I pick her up and give her hugs and kisses too."
