Former NYPD officer Justin Volpe faces sentencing today in Federal District Court in Brooklyn, as he and the man he was convicted of beating and sodomizing are set to speak out.

Volpe admitted to torturing Hatian immigrant Abner Louima, and will speak on his own behalf.

"The New York Times" reports he is expected to express remorse for the attack and ask for mercy.

Volpe's girlfriend of three years has reportedly sent a last minute letter to the judge asking for leniency.

Abner Louima's lawyer says his client will also speak before the judge in the case, giving a victim's impact statement prior to the sentencing. However, the lawyer did not say what will be included in that statement.

While Volpe and four fellow officers were on trial for the attack earlier this year, Volpe admitted to sodomizing Louima inside the bathroom of Brooklyn's 70th Precinct stationhouse in 1997. Three of the four other officers were convicted by the jury.

Prosecutors are expected to recommend Volpe be sentenced to life in prison without parole.
