NY1 has a new look – both on the air and in our newsroom – following our move into brand-new studios in Chelsea Market. Paul Messina takes a look at the new facility.

If you've ever moved from one home to another you have some idea of what's happening to NY1. But multiply it by a thousand.

So what attracted NY1 executives to the Chelsea Market building?

“We liked the high base ceilings of the place," says NY1 Engineering Director Jeff Polikoff. "It had 35-foot ceilings, and it was a column-less space, so it enabled us to create studios."

NY1’s new studio is actually someone else’s old studio. The HBO prison drama "OZ" used to film here.

“It really looked like a jail,” says Polikoff. “There were cells, there were isolation areas, there was a mess hall and there was a gym.”

Now it's a newsroom, which includes offices, desks and studios. If you haven't already, you'll soon be seeing shows like “Inside City Hall” from one new studio, while programs like “New York Close-Up” and “On Stage” will be produced in another studio.

The newsroom environment is even more eye-popping – think “Star Trek” with a dash of Madison Square Garden sky box thrown in.

What NY1ers call "The Cone" is actually two levels of conference rooms. “It was strictly an architectural design," Polikoff said. "They wanted to make a statement, and they got it through the cone.”

NY1 took over the space in the fall of 2000. Over the course of 16 months it was gutted and rebuilt into a state-of-the-art facility.

Just know this: as NY1 moves from a space with 25,000 square feet to a place with 55,000, we promise to put each one of those additional square feet into our on-air product.
