FDNY Battles Second Fire At Fulton Street Building

Fire officials are investigating after flames broke out Monday morning inside the same Lower Manhattan building where crews put out a four alarm fire just hours before.

The New York City Fire Department says it broke out at 2 a.m. on the fourth and fifth floors of a commercial building located at 140 Fulton Street.

A drop ceiling collapsed during Sunday's fire and a rear roof section collapsed in Monday's fire.

At least one firefighter suffered minor injuries.

The Red Cross says it is assisting five families who were evacuated from the building next door.

Firefighters believe the fires were separate.

"We think it's doubtful that there was a hotspot from yesterday. The fire was in a different area and we had people on the scene last night until six o'clock. So it's gonna be investigated," said FDNY Chief John Esposito.

A sign out front indicates one of the burned out businesses is Caruso's Pizza and Pasta. One customer who spoke with NY1 was on his way to work when he realized what happened.

"I used to come for lunch and it is a shame it went up in flames. Whole building went up. It had a good business, moved from Broadway and now don't know what will happen. It was a good place. Lines were long. Food was good. It is a shame that it happened," said the customer.

Sunday's fire was contained to the second and third floors.

More than 128 firefighters were called to the scene.

Three suffered minor injuries.
