Anita Harris described a horrific scene as she escaped a fire that broke out in the apartment right below hers on Grant Avenue in Morrisania.

"You could see when you come down the stairs from the door the black smoke coming out of the 4B apartment, too," she said. "You didn't hear anybody or anything. And I just start thinking about those kids. What, where are the children?"

Neighbors said a man, woman and several children lived in the fourth-floor apartment where the fire started, including Hazel Martinez, 7, who was killed.

Her 3-year-old sister, whom police sources identified as Hailey, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

"I seen a firefighter bring out what appeared to be an infant, maybe one or two years old, and just immediately started performing CPR," said Paul Colletti, a Morrisania resident. "EMS came on Sherman Avenue. The firefighter took the baby in his arms and just ran up this block right here, 164, to the ambulance."

""I know them in passing, you know, of course, saying hello to them. They're very nice people," said one person at the scene.

Kelvin Santana was at Lincoln Hospital with his own daughter when the victims of the fire were brought in.

"The other little girl, they had her in intensive care, and they had at least eight to 10 doctors, specialists seeing her," he said.

As fire marshals and police continue to piece together what happened, neighbors are mourning little the loss of Hazel, a girl they said was an angel.

"Very bubbly. I'm so sad that we won't be able to see her," Harris said. "Those eyes were absolutely beautiful. I used to tell her dad, 'You're going to have trouble when that one grows up, with the boys.' She was a beautiful little girl."

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
