Thirty middle school students from East Harlem got an up-close and personal look at medical studies Saturday, as they dissected sheep brains and cows' eyes at the Icahn School of Medicine on the Upper East Side.

The children were mentored by 20 freshmen medical students hosting "Neuro Day," which is part of the medical school's five year old MedStart program.

The middle schoolers were most excited about the interactive aspects of the lessons.

"It's not like a normal teacher that just like asks you to memorize stuff. You get to do hands-on activities," said student Amir Mustefa.

"Well, I'm dissecting a cow eye," said student Joel Mentor. "It's pretty interesting, slightly disgusting, but very awesome."

Students also learned how the brain works and how to recognize common mental health disorders.

The free camp hosts two spring "mini-medical school" sessions and one in the summer.
