Amar Diarrosova, 6, was hit by a tractor trailer at the intersection of First Avenue and 117th Street Thursday morning.

He was walking to school with his 9-year-old brother.

Flavia Roman, 55, who was the crossing guard assigned to the intersection, told investigators that she left her post to use the bathroom.

Police say Roman never notified her supervisor that she was on break.

Now, they say they're looking into whether she was honest when she called to say she arrived at the intersection for the beginning of her shift.

"What happens is, they call in. In this case, she did call in to the youth officer in the precinct and said that she was on post at 07:30," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. "Then, we have call supervisors that supervise the individual. So if you have to leave, you call back and say you are leaving."

Some crossing guards NY1 spoke with talked about how important their job is.

"It's a job that you have to be there," said Felicita Gaston, a former crossing guard. "Unfortunately, the city doesn't have enough school crossing guards. The pay is very low. So, why they leave their post, I don't know. I can't account for anybody else, only for myself."

The driver of the tractor trailer was ticketed for failing to yield to a pedestrian.
