Police on Wednesday arrested a Bronx man and his friend in connection with the death of his mother, whose dismembered body was discovered in multiple trash bags the day before.

Bashid McLean, 23, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his mother, Tanya Bird, 45.

The New York City Police Department says McLean, 23, seen above, and William Harris, 26, are both charged with hindering prosecution and unlawful dissection of a human body.

Harris is also charged with criminal possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Police say that Byrd's body was discovered in at least four locations in Melrose and Morrisania early Tuesday morning.

The medical examiner says Byrd died due to stab wounds to the neck and ruled her death a homicide.

As McLean was escorted by authorities out of a police station in Mott Haven, he did not show expression and was gazing at the sky.

Sources say McLean told detectives that Harris was responsible for the killing.

Investigators believe Byrd, a mother of three, was dismembered inside her East 158th Street apartment in the St. Mary's Park Houses complex.

Neighbors erected a makeshift memorial outside the complex and in the lobby.

A family friend told NY1 that McLean moved in with Byrd when he was 18 and showed troubling behavior.

"She was scared of him because he did crazy things," the family friend said. "He didn't want to go to school. He didn't want to work. He used to smoke cigars with coffee grounds. He used to make meth with the coffee grounds and everything. So my daughter was scared of him, too. She was scared that he might do something to the little baby. He robbed from her. He used to push her."

"That man would give me the creeps," said neighbor Juan Diaz. "I got a bad vibe from him."

Friends and neighbors of Byrd called the details of her death dreadful.

"What her son did was terrible, destroyed her like she was an animal," said neighbor Juan Diaz. "I hope he pays."

Police sealed the apartment Byrd shared with her son and brought evidence to the precinct for processing.

A police source tells NY1 latex gloves and a power saw were found inside Byrd's home.
