Crews Put Out Midtown Manhole Fire

By: NY1 News

Fire officials say that several of their units, as well as Con Edison crews, were called to the scene of a manhole fire in Midtown Saturday afternoon.

The New York City Fire Department says the call for the manhole fire came in at approximately 2:30 p.m.

The manhole fire was located at the corner of 36th Street and Madison Avenue.

The manhole fire was under control at approximately 3:35 p.m., according to fire officials.

A New York Sports Club on the first floor of a building nearby had to be evacuated because carbon monoxide levels were slightly elevated, according to the fire department.

No injuries were reported.

Con Edison said they are investigating the cause of the fire.

They said that during times of snowfall, manhole fires can happen as a result of snow and salt mixing together.
