Lawyers Seek Block For NYPD Muslim Surveillance Efforts

Civil rights lawyers are seeking an injunction against the New York City Police Department over its surveillance of the Muslim community after the September 11th attacks.
In a new court filing, the lawyers are asking a judge to put a stop to further police surveillance without evidence of crimes.
They also want a new court-appointed auditor to oversee police activities.
The lawyers say NYPD methods violate the Handschu guidelines set in a landmark legal ruling back in 1985.
That ruling set strict time limits for investigations, imposed rules on the kinds of records police could keep and created a three-person body to oversee such investigations.
The NYPD and Mayor Michael Bloomberg say the department follows federal guidelines and has not broken any laws.
