City inspectors have been stepping up elevator inspections and cracking down on violations in the year since an ad executive was killed in a freak accident in a Manhattan office building.

In December 2011, Suzanne Hart was killed when an elevator suddenly jolted upward as she was boarding, crushing her.

Since her death, the Department of Buildings says it has added eight additional inspectors.

DOB officials also gave out 753 of its most serious fines between January to October in 2012, which is a 50-percent increase.
