The Brooklyn Academy of Music in Fort Greene hosted its 27th annual tribute to the late Civil Rights leader.

Dr. King's close friend, actor and activist Harry Belafonte, was this year's keynote speaker.

He said while he was glad to see President Barack Obama re-elected, it is up to everyone, including him, to fulfill Dr. King's legacy.

"Although I'm glad to celebrate Dr King's birthday, I'm glad Barack Obama is having a second inauguration. What that means to me is that we have another chance - for him to get right. I think we are obliged to get behind him and to make it a task - from our point of view; he'll be happy to fulfill," Belafonte said.

Hundreds came out for the music-filled event and many talked about how the timing made the day even more special.

"It is a great experience to really celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King and President Obama at the same time. Something I really want my family especially my kids to experience," said one attendee.

"I want them to feel the spirit of togetherness of everyone. The inclusiveness. The message Dr. Martin Luther King tried to spread, the fact that we were all equal and we should all be united," said another attendee.

Dr. King's life is also being celebrated with a day of service.

Volunteers are taking part in the 10th annual Martin Luther King Serve-a-Thon, feeding the hungry and helping the needy.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg also spoke at an interfaith celebration in the Bronx.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner was in Memphis, Tennessee to show support for striking garbage collectors when he was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

Dr. King would have been 84 years old this year.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday, meaning there are closings and service changes around the city.

Banks, financial markets, schools and courts are closed.

There is no garbage or recycling pickup, and no street cleaning.

Alternate side parking rules are suspended but you do have to feed the meters.

Subways, buses and the Staten Island Railway are on the regular weekday schedule.

Long Island Rail Road is running on a holiday schedule and Metro-North runs on a Saturday schedule.

Off-peak fares are in effect all day.
