Police say Wei Chu Wu, 45, started the five-alarm blaze inside 41 Spring Street around 6:40 p.m. Thursday after getting into a fight with his child's mother.

Investigators say one person was found dead on the third floor fire escape, believed to be a woman who lived in the building with her husband for 40 years.

She was burned beyond recognition.

The woman who was involved in the dispute and her 13-year-old son were both accounted for.

The couple reportedly came to New York from China a year ago.

Police say Wu was transported to New York Downtown hospital for bruises after he fought with first responders who were trying to enter the building.

He is said to have broken one male police officer's hand during the altercation.

As a result, Wu is also charged with attempted assault of an officer and resisting arrest.

Residents who spoke with NY1 in the neighborhood Friday were still trying to make sense of the tragedy

"He was barefoot and he was extremely upset. He had a blank thing on his face. And he was in handcuffs. His lip was broken and he was like bleeding," said one SoHo resident.

"You ruin the whole building and everyone who lives in the building. You ruin the building over your love triangle or whatever? Terrible," said another SoHo resident

The FDNY says nearly 200 firefighters responded to the fire.

An investigation is ongoing.
