Police have arrested a 45-year-old male suspect for allegedly starting the massive fire that killed one and injured eight others in SoHo Thursday night.

Police have transported the suspect to New York Downtown hospital for bruises after he fought with first responders trying to enter the building. He broke one male police officer's hand during the altercation.

At about 6:40 p.m. police say witnesses saw the suspect start a fire in the second floor hallway after a domestic dispute with a woman with whom he has a child.

The woman and child have been accounted for.

Nearly 200 firefighters responded to the fire, which completely destroyed a five-story multi-family walkup at 41 Spring Street.

The unidentified person who died was found on a third floor fire escape, burned beyond recognition.

Firefighters fought the blaze for three hours before they were able to extinguish it.
