Marc La Vorgna, the press secretary for Mayor Michael Bloomberg, stopped by NY1 Wednesday to answer criticisms of the city's Rapid Repairs program.

The program was set up to help people whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Sandy quickly get fixed, but some homeowners complained that it's taking too long.

The city has said there aren't enough electricians to meet the demand.

La Vorgna defended the city's efforts, saying the scope of the project was unprecedented.

He conceded there have been some minor kinks, but La Vorgna said there are now 4,000 people back in their homes that otherwise would not have been.

"We went out, took responsibility for this, something no other city has ever done," La Vorgna said. "No other state, no other municipality, no other county, whatever it is, has ever said 'OK, we're gonna help you get this done,' as opposed to saying 'OK, talk to FEMA, let them write you a check. You go off and Google a plumber and Google a contractor and find a way to get it done, or find your electrician that way.'"

La Vorgna said contractors are working to get another 1,500 units up and running.

He did not have a end date for the program.
