It took about 45 minutes to make the sky-high journey.

"Nothing keeps New York down. That's what I was thinking as it was rising," said one onlooker.

"We're doing this for all the people that we lost," said one construction worker.

The 408-foot spire will eventually top off the skyscraper at 1,776 feet.

Nine sections of the spire arrived in New York by barge Tuesday after traveling about 1,700 hundred miles from Canada.

Each piece weighs 70 tons and can only be lifted into place if wind speeds at the construction site does not exceed 30 miles an hour.

Nine more sections are being trucked in from Canada and New Jersey.

"We're getting very close to the end of a long and wonderful journey. This represents to me an exclamation point on the end of a wonderful project," said Director of World Trade Center Construction Steve Plate.

Developers hope to add one piece of the spire every week, putting it on track for a spring completion.

When it's finished, One World Trade Center will be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.
