A Navy veteran who died on Staten Island during Hurricane Sandy was laid to rest on Tuesday.

Mourners gathered for veteran David Maxwell's final salute at St. Charles Church in Oakwood.

The 66-year-old Vietnam vet drowned when his Midland Beach home was hit by Hurricane Sandy's storm surge.

The former Navy sailor's body was recovered 11 days after flood waters receded on Veterans Day.

All of Maxwell's belongings were ruined, including any photos of him.

Friends describe him as a kind, friendly man.

"He came out with a smile on his face no matter what and he made people laugh, and he was always there to help people," said Stewart Chambers, a friend of Maxwell.

Thanks to the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs and the Catholic War Veterans, Maxwell was laid to rest in Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island with full military honors.
