Red Hook Bakery Repoens Five Weeks After Sandy Damage

A well-known bakery in Red Hook is back in business, five weeks after it was damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies are once again on the menu in Brooklyn.

It took Steve and Victoria Tarpin more than five weeks to reopen their store after Hurricane Sandy flooded their Red Hook warehouse, causing more than $40,000 worth of damage.

Due to the fact that the water was three feet high here, we had, everything from three feet below was lost," said Steve Tarpin.

Along with broken machinery, they've had to deal with the mold left behind from water damage, installing new sheet rock.

"Primarily, we focused on dealing with the bakery, which is maybe 30 percent of the walls that we have here were compromised," Steve Tarpin said.

Owners said they tried getting help from the Small Business Administration but are having trouble recovering tax documents they say were destroyed. So owners have had to rely on volunteers and donations. Even the company which provides their pie crusts has donated goods and supplies.

At least one employee with Liberty Warehouse, a nearby catering company, said it's been hard hosting events without the popular pies.

"I've had it, like, at every event, so if I'm working, I'll have one or two," said Milton Parra, who works at Liberty Warehouse. "They're actually that good."

"It's addictive," said Victoria Tarpin. "This key lime pie is addictive."
