According to New York Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, $190 million in FEMA money has been approved for what is being called the first round of funding.

Of that $190 million, $75 million dollars has been allocated for the NYPD to cover extra staffing costs.

NYU's Langone Medical Center will get $114 million to repair damage to the hospital.

Word of the funding comes one day after Gov. Andrew Cuomo went to Washington, D.C. to lobby lawmakers.

He asked for more than $40 billion in federal recovery money.

Mayor Bloomberg has also been to Washington to make a pitch for help.

Public Hearings On ConEd, LIPA Performance Slated For December

New Yorkers will have the chance to share their opinions on how Consolidated Edison and the Long Island Power Authority performed after Sandy during two public hearings.

They will be held by the state commission investigating their storm performance.

One will take place Thursday at 6 p.m. at Lighthouse International on the Upper East Side.
The other will be Dec. 11 in the Student Union Center at SUNY College of Westbury on Long Island.

A NY1 Marist Poll also asked New Yorkers about ConEd and LIPA.

Of those surveyed, 65 percent approve of ConEd's handling of the storm while only 20 percent approved of the job LIPA did.

In addition to public testimony experts will be invited to comment on the preparedness and response of the utilities before, during and after Hurricanes Sandy and Irene.

They will also give recommendations for restructuring the oversight of the companies.
