Seven years after the New York City Fire Department flew firefighters to New Orleans to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans firefighters are in New York to return the favor.

The first firefighters arrived at LaGuardia Tuesday.

40 will be making the trip over the next three weeks.

They say they're here to help in any way they can and to give back for what the FDNY did to help them in 2005.

"We know what it feels like to lose stuff, to lose everything, and basically, when they showed up, they uplifted the spirits of all my brothers, and what we're trying to do is come here and return the favor," said Capt. David Nick of the New Orleans Fire Department.

"They fought fires next to us while they were in New Orleans, and it's a brotherhood and sisterhood that, you know, you can only describe by being a part of it," said Capt. Billy Shanks of the New Orleans Fire Department.

Southwest Airlines is shuttling the firefighters over three trips.

They will primarily work in aiding the recovery of Staten Island.
