The damage from Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath was difficult for tenants of Manhattan's Peter Cooper Village.

Jeremy Barbera had been taking care of his 85-year-old mother Laura, but she returned to her apartment in Gramercy on Monday.

With a friend's help, Jeremy Barbera carried his elderly mother down eight flights of stairs in a wheelchair after the power went out.

The power in Laura Barbera's building is back on.

"I carried her down eight flights of stairs, with no light or anything," said Jeremy Barbera.

"He's the most incredible son anybody ever ever had. Incredible," said Laura Barbera. "I was stuck in the dark for two days."

City Councilman Dan Garodnick lives in Peter Cooper Village, and his office coordinated volunteer efforts the past week.

A spokesman said, as of Monday night, four buildings at Peter Cooper Village were still without power.
