Brooklyn School Chess Team Works To Support After-School Programs

Some city students who are champion chess players are hoping to make all the right moves to highlight the importance of after-school programs.
As part of national 'Make a Difference Day' Saturday, chess players from championship-winning IS 318 in Williamsburg are setting up a program to put student chess coaches in local elementary schools.
The students are featured in a new critically-acclaimed documentary called "Brooklyn Castle."
Pobo Efekoro, a former member of the team, spoke about what the game has taught him.
"I can now be patient when I'm doing something, and I think that's very important because maybe that's something that a lot of people don't have today in our world," Efekoro said. "Strategy. You have to plan. You need to plan. And work ethic."
Chess boards are on their way to local schools so other students can get their own chess programs up and running.
