Just two days after being shot while breaking up a robbery, he was able to go home. A few hours earlier, he was promoted from officer to detective in a brief hospital bed ceremony with the mayor and police commissioner.

"He was appreciative but he certainly was surprised," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Marcano was off duty Wednesday evening, riding with his girlfriend, when she spotted two men robbing and pistol whipping a 60-year-old man on Harrison Avenue near West Tremont Avenue.

When the transit cop identified himself, police say 18-year-old Jason Price shot him in the chest.

As Marcano and his girlfriend tried to rush to the hospital, they wound up right behind the suspects' white Mustang.

Police say three men jumped out and ran. Marcano gave chase. While bleeding and holding his wound, he opened fire, killing Price.

"He did everything we could've asked and more," Kelly said. "What he did,
he did for the people of this city. He took immediate action."

Police say they recovered a gun. 20-year-old Jason Levia was arrested and Rodain Ortega turned himself in.

"The bullet, again, actually grazed his arm, entered his chest area, passed in front of his heart, exited, entered his right chest pectoral muscle and lodged there.

Doctors were successful in removing the bullet. He is expected to make a full recovery.
