Police say Marina Krim came home with her 3-year-old child on Thursday to her apartment on the second floor of a luxury landmarked building on 75th Street.

"The mother may have entered the apartment, sees that the lights are out," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. "She goes downstairs to the lobby. She’s assuming the nanny may have gone out with the children. She goes down to the lobby, asks the doorman if they in fact have gone out. He said "no." She goes back up to the apartment. It's dark."

When she went into the bathroom, police say she discovered her two other children in a tub, allegedly stabbed to death by their nanny, who was unconscious.

"The nanny of those children on the bathroom floor with stab wounds to her neck, those wounds appear to be self-inflicted, and a kitchen knife on the bathroom floor," said Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne.

Police say a neighbor called 911 after hearing Krim's screams.

"Uncontrollably, hysterically, frantically crying and clutching her child," said Sandy Marcus, who lives upstairs. "They are a family with a lot of children who play in the hallway and who look like a happy family with children."

The two children killed were Lulu, 6, who went to nearby PS 87 and Leo, who just had his second birthday. Their father, Kevin, who works for CNBC, was in San Francisco at the time.

"I feel terrible about that, man," said one resident. "The nanny, she should get the death penalty."

The nanny, identified by sources as Yoselyn Ortega, was taken to Cornell Hospital in critical condition.
