For the first time ever the National Geographic Society is selling a selection of its archive at Christie's auction house in Manhattan.
The 240 lots are expected to bring in about $3 million.
The Washington-based institution has chronicled scientific expeditions, wildlife and world cultures for more than 100 years, amassing 11.5 million photographs and original illustrations.
Proceeds from the December 6 auction will go toward the promotion and preservation of the archive.
The public can check out the collection at Christies Rockafeller Center location in the days leading up to the auction.
