Thousands of city kids competed in the New York Road Runners Youth Jamboree in Washington Heights, Manhattan on Sunday.
The event at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory is the first of three jamborees held during the school year.
Organizers said track and field events are a great way for children to have fun while also being active.
"The events I'm participating is in the relay and 200-meter," said participant Kielah Burrows.
"The obesity epidemic is so great, getting the kids started early in track and field or in fitness and health is a wonderful thing," said coach Clive Waters.
"It's just a great opportunity for kids to run to jump to play and get a great feel for what this great sport is all about," said Cliff Sperber, New York Road Runners' vice president of youth and community services.
The event, which is free for kids and adults, has been held since 2004.
All participants are awarded with T-shirts and ribbons.
