Federal officials now believe a man facing child pornography charges in San Diego was an accomplice in the alleged plot to bomb the Federal Reserve building in Lower Manhattan.

Howard Willie Carter II pleaded not guilty to three counts of child pornography in a California courtroom Friday.

Investigators tell the Associated Press they discovered the child porn after examining his computer.

They were looking into his communications with Quazi Nafis, who is charged in the federal reserve plot.

Carter has yet to be charged in the plot but is listed as a co-conspirator in the federal complaint against Nafis.

Meanwhile, conflicting accounts are surfacing about Nafis.

Friends say the 21-year-old often said true Muslims don't believe in violence and his parents say he came to America on a student visa to study.

But authorities say he used his student visa to come to the U.S. from Bangladesh with intentions of committing jihad.

He is being held without bail on charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and trying to provide material support to al-Qaeda.

Nafis attended ASA College at the school's Manhattan campus, attending class the day before he allegedly tried to detonate the bomb.

In a statement, the school said, "We are completely baffled by this. We've never had a problem like this before. It could have happened at any school. We are still in shock about this."
