The 32-year-old mother of three went straight into the arms of her 10-year-old son Toby late Friday night after being driven from the Virginia prison where she spent almost four months.

She had been an innocent bystander during a sting to catch people buying fake green cards, according to her lawyer, C.J. Wang.

"They don't have enough evidence to support an indictment of her for a criminal case," Wang said. "So then release her."

That's exactly what happened. After learning of her plight from news reports, more than 500 New Yorkers signed an online petition at change.org that got the attention of immigration officials.

"No matter what your political stance is on immigration, we can all agree that a son needs his mother and an elderly father needs the care of his daughter," Wang said.

Through an interpreter, Ms. Lin, holding her baby daughter, said "I'm so happy. I haven't seen my girl in so long. I forgot what she looked like."

Immigration officials said Friday night she was released for humanitarian reasons but their investigation continues.

Ms. Lin will remain on modified house arrest and wear an ankle bracelet. Her lawyer said it isn't fair but everyone is just glad she's home.
