LaGuardia Community College hosted the discussion, which centered on the long-term outlook for the DREAM Act, as well as the Obama Administration's deferred action program.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney said it's important for students to know about the options available to them.

"Today, we were going about the executive order that the president put in place to defer any deportation for two years for those that are eligible," Maloney said. "We are encouraging students to apply for it so they can come out of the shadows and be a part of the American economy."

"We're all coming more united and we're all coming out stronger and we're emerging from every city and we've come together," said undocumented student Pedro Villarroel.

The DREAM Act would provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants brought to this country as children who have completed some college courses or served in the military.

President Obama enacted some of its provisions by executive order. They went into effect earlier this year.
